Riley Is a Month Old!

Believe it or not, Riley is a month old today!  That's a month closer to growing out of colic, so it makes me happy!  He's growing very well.  He started out at 7 lbs, 2 ozs, and weighed in at 9 lbs 3.75 ozs this morning.

My leave is 1/3 over.  Feels weird.  It's not going fast exactly... it's going rather better at least, thanks largely to Dr. Harvey Karp and his "5 S's," which have helped us manage Mr. Fussy-Pants and means that Momma is not so very sleep deprived.  Momma is not very tolerant of sleep deprivation, we have learned....

He almost weighs as much as Rogue. But she's two and will always be my fluffy little baby.
When Riley hits 15 pounds, he will weigh as much as Shadowcat...

"Swaddle, Sedate, Scream, Sooth, and Stab" (not all are meant for the baby - the husband gets the scream and stab)

The 5 S's are his approach to calming fussy/colicky babies. It doesn't work perfectly, but it has helped us.

Swaddling
Side/Stomach Position
Shushing (e.g. vacuum cleaner noise)
Swinging/Jiggling
Sucking (i.e. pacifier)

Cleaning up blood is so out of the question right now.

Thank you for the mention of Dr. Karp in your journal. Riley looks adorable as a sweet pea! Dr. Karp wanted to recommend you watch the DVD since it is the fastest, most accurate way for parents (especially dads!) to learn how to do the 5 S’s correctly, and to use a white noise source (like our Super Soothing Sleep Sounds CD) to help your baby sleep.

The CD is a source of white noise that should be played as loudly as a shower sound every night to help increase the quality and quantity of your baby’s sleep. Parents repeatedly tell us that the DVD and our white noise CD work almost immediately to calm fussing and to help their babies sleep longer. This means that you and Riley will get at least an additional 1-3 hours of sleep every night (you'll be less sleep deprived!).
